چکیده

Since antiquity, artisans have created attened forms, often called \bas-reliefs," which give an exaggerated perception of depth when viewed from a particular vantage point. This paper presents an explanation of this phenomena, showing that the ambiguity in determining the relief of an object is not con ned to bas-relief sculpture but is implicit in the determination of the structure of any object. Formally, if the object's true surface is denoted by ztrue = f(x; y), then we de ne the \generalized bas-relief transformation" as z = f(x; y) + x+ y; with a corresponding transformation of the albedo. For each image of a Lambertian surface f(x; y) produced by a point light source at in nity, there exists an identical image of a bas-relief produced by a transformed light source. This equality holds for both shaded and shadowed regions. Thus, the set of possible images (illumination cone) is invariant over generalized bas-relief transformations. When = = 0 (e.g. a classical bas-relief sculpture), we show that the set of possible motion elds are also identical. Thus, neither small unknown motions nor changes of illumination can resolve the bas-relief ambiguity. Implications of this ambiguity on structure recovery and shape representation are discussed.

A New Structure--From--Motion Ambiguity

We demonstrate the existence of a new approximate ambiguity in structure from motion which occurs as generically as the bas{relief ambiguity but applies more strongly to scenes with larger depth variation. It occurs for moderate translations and eld of view (as for the bas{relief ambiguity) and applies to multi{frame, nite{motion sequences where the camera moves roughly along a line, as well as...

Resolution of the Bas-relief ambiguity in structure-from-motion under orthographic projection

Under orthographic projection, two views of a rigid moving object are insufficient to uniquely determine the structure and motion of the object, due to the existence of the bas-relief ambiguity. Resolution of this ambiguity relies upon either prior information about the motion of the object, or else further views of the object. Two novel algorithms to resolve the bas-relief ambiguity are develo...

Structure from Linear or Planar Motions

We recently demonstrated a new approach to mul-tiframe structure from motion from point features which, in the appropriate domain, provably reconstructs structure and motion correctly. The algorithm works for general motion and large perspective eeects. In this paper, we describe how to adapt our approach to translational motion lying along a line or in a plane, with arbitrary rotations. An ana...

A Multi { frame Structure { from { Motion Algorithm under

We present a fast, robust algorithm for multi{frame structure from motion from point features which works for general motion and large perspective eeects. Experimental results on synthetic and real sequences show that the algorithm gives results essentially as accurate as the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) in a couple of seconds on an IRIS 10000 (for 15 images of 30 points). The results are ...

The KGBR Viewpoint-Lighting Ambiguity and its Resolution by Generic Constraints

We describe a novel viewpoint-lighting ambiguity which we call the KGBR. This ambiguity assumes orthographic projection or an affine camera, and uses Lambertian reflectance functions including cast/attached shadows and multiple light sources. A KGBR transform alters the geometry (by a three-dimensional affine transformation) and albedo properties of objects. If two objects are related by a KGBR...
